He has. And now he’s working hard to relearn the baseball skills that made him the Red Sox’s top outfield prospect.

Sean McAdam checks in with Westmoreland in Fort Myers, Fla., where he’s working out with the Sox’s Instructional team.

It’s definitely worth reading.

The Red Sox’s walk-off loss (on a walk, no less) to the Yankees on Sunday night was their 12th walk-off loss of the season. That’s the most in the American League. That’s tied for the second most in baseball.

That’s a big reason the Sox are playing out the string instead of playing for a playoff spot.

So enjoy Clay Buchholz’s start tonight against the White Sox. Root for Jon Lester to win No. 20 on Thursday. Watch Ryan Kalish throw himself around the outfield (and hope he doesn’t get picked off first base again in the bottom of the ninth).

And try not to fret too much about all the Sox’s spilled milk.

Remember, Theo Epstein did say 2010 was going to be a bridge year. You just have to hope the waters that bridge spans will be a little less troubled in 2011.

For insight on how Shaq will contribute on the floor this season, let’s turn to the brilliant minds at the Onion:

Shaq to Solidify Celtics’ Ability to Get 3-Second Violations

BOSTON—NBA analyst David Aldridge said Wednesday that with the addition of Shaquille O’Neal, the Celtics have vastly improved their chances of leading the league in three-second lane violations for the 2010–2011 season. “Not only does Shaq’s presence in the paint give his team more opportunities to turn the ball over, but the Celtics have also added an experienced big man who makes an already old team significantly older,” said Aldridge, adding that O’Neal should fill a key role in terms of drastically slowing down the Celtics’ offense. “Danny Ainge was looking for someone with size who can’t make it down to the other end of the court, and he went out and got the best in the business.” Aldridge added that while O’Neal isn’t the dominant force he once was, he believes Shaq still has a thing or two to teach teams who think it’s a good idea to sign him.

Sounds about right to me!

New research shows that some athletes and soldiers who had previously been diagnosed with A.L.S. might not actually have had the disease, and instead may have had a similar disease brought on by multiple head injuries.

Which means many things, but among them there’s this fascinating note: Lou Gehrig may not have had Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Gehrig, nicknamed the Iron Horse for his consecutive games streak, famously played through many head injuries, including some that left him unconscious. Though we can’t know for sure since his remains were cremated, it’s entirely possible that Gehrig did not have A.L.S. at all.

Science*, boy, I don’t know.

*This is a completely obscure reference to a line in “The West Wing.” I imagine that only two people, myself included, will understand it. Please excuse any confusion it may cause, but I couldn’t resist.

It seems there are breakthroughs in the field of neuroscience every other week these days. I can’t wait to see what they find next.

…Square, with Shira Springer in tow.

Lucky for us, too, since that means we get to tag along.

Love him or hate him, you can’t deny this fact: Shaq is quite the entertainer.

He may be a mountain of a man, but he’s never off in the misty distance. He’s right here, at arm’s length, in our collective faces.

Quoteth (and writeth) Springer:

“People see me as touchable and real,’’ said O’Neal. “I make them feel like I know that guy. You’ve got to be yourself. A lot of athletes make the mistake of trying to build their brand. I built my brand just by playing and being myself. People who have the most successful image live by what I live by. Image is reality. A lot of stuff I do, I’ve been doing since I’ve been 8-years-old.’’

And for him, that often means playing the comedian. He is a pretty funny guy, and he knows it.

“My mother told me, ‘You are so funny it’s either going to get you in trouble or make you a lot of money one day,’ ’’ said O’Neal.

Well, his prodigious physical gifts — size and basketball ability — probably had more to do with making his money, but his sense of humor likely hasn’t hurt any.

And it won’t hinder him endearing himself with the new fanbase. Shaq’s been around the block. He knows the drill. And he performs it well.

He acknowledges history, tipping his cap to Bill Russell and the Celtics’ storied history. He makes light of the potential for distraction that his signing introduces into the C’s locker room. He says he just wants to win.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Prediction: Assuming he’s healthy and productive, even if only slightly, Shaq will be a fan favorite.

Because let’s face it, Shaq is too big — literally and figuratively — to fail*.

*Hmm…where have I heard that before? Oh, right…At least in this instance, if he does fail the buyout will only cost $2.8 million, and not hundreds of billions.

But what we don’t know will shock us. Take this Wright Thompson piece from ESPN The Magazine.

Written while he was still at Louisiana State University, and published in January 2007, the piece details Davis’ rough upbringing and struggles with being the happy-go-lucky Baby publicly while privately he’s a lost and confused kid.

It’s a whole ‘nother side to Glen Davis, one worth exploring. So do yourself a favor: Read it.

This just in…*: The Boston Red Sox, who absolutely cannot stay healthy this season, have suffered another injury.

John Lister, the front office executive responsible for handling the Sox’s disabled list, confirmed today that he has placed himself on the 15-day DL.

Lister is suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. Red Sox team physician Thomas Gill said the lefty was experiencing sharp pain in his wrist, which interfered with his ability to fill out paperwork — a key aspect of DL management.

“He started to feel it a little bit back in San Francisco, when we had that rash of injuries,” Sox GM Theo Epstein said in a news release. “He tried to work through it, but when Pedey [Dustin Pedroia] came back off the DL last week it hurt Lister pretty bad. And then to have to put him back on just days later? That’s a lot of paperwork in a short period of time.

“In retrospect, we probably shouldn’t have asked him to do that. … That’s bad management on our part.”

Lister, for his part, wasn’t pointing fingers. At least not with his heavily bandaged left hand.

“You know, it’s disappointing,” the 10-year exec said. “You never want to miss time, especially this late in the season. I mean, we’re trying to get back in the pennant race. It’s really important to expedite paperwork in July and August … and to not be able to do that, it’s definitely hard.”

Lister is not expected to need surgery.

*This fake news story has been brought to you by: The ridiculous string of injuries that has hit the Sox this season; Ace Bandage; and the Orthopedic surgery department at Mass General Hospital.

Zoltan Mesko, that is, the New England Patriots’ rookie punter and the man The Wall Street Journal just called: “The NFL’s Most Interesting Man.”

No, really, they did. Here’s the proof: Zoltan Mesko — the NFL’s Most Interesting Man.

By reading the Journal article, I learned that Mesko:

Speaks five languages;

Has Romanian ancestry;

Didn’t start playing American football until he broke a ceiling light with a kick ball in junior high;

And after signing his first pro contract told his parents they didn’t need to give him walking-around money anymore.

Those are the personal highlights, anyway. There are athletic highlights, too, but I’ll let you read the story to find those for yourself.

Zoltan Mesko — what a name. Whether or not Patriots fans will be saying it for years to come remains to be seen.

But what’s already clear is that his name (and his background) already makes him the most interesting rookie punter to come along in years.
