Breer hired to replace Reiss
Bruce at BSMW says The Globe has hired Albert Breer to replace Mike Reiss on the Patriots beat.
Don’t really know Breer’s work, so I’ll have to reserve judgement on his replacing Reiss. What I find most interesting in this report is this last graf:
Though I haven’t been able to confirm just yet, the lineup I’m hearing the Globe will trot out for the Patriots will have Adam Kilgore moving over from the Red Sox to serve as the Patriots beat reporter, Breer as the NFL columnist, and Chris Gasper will move to the role of online columnist … similar to what Tony Massarotti has been doing.
If that’s true, and Breer will step in immediately as the NFL columnist, it’ll be the second hire for a national (leaguewide) columnist — following the Gary Washburn hire after Marc J. Spears left for Yahoo! Sports — in the past six months.
This is speculation on my part, but might Gasper be fielding offers from one of the (many) new online outlets in town? Yesterday, Bruce posted about Art Martone, the sports editor of the Providence Journal, leaving for Comcast Sports Net (CSSNE.com). Bruce links to Scott MacKay’s blog, on WRNI.org, and gives us the last graf … so I’ll give you him giving us the last graf:
The really interesting part of this post is the last paragraph, which reads:
For Martone, the new post is a good opportunity. Reportedly joining Martone in the new venture is Globe hockey sportswriter Kevin Paul DuPont, McAdam and former Journal sportswriter and football beat guy Tom Curran.
Those are three pretty big names in the local market that could be going to the new CSNNE.com. The site recently had a makeover, and has had Michael Felger providing Patriots content for the last few weeks.
Hadn’t heard anything about DuPont leaving the Globe, that’d be a big loss for the Bruins beat, and seems like McAdam just got to the Herald. Point is, the Boston market is very volatile right now, and one hire almost always seems to begat another.
So for now, Breer is in for Reiss and the Globe lineup will be reshuffled.
Will be back with the details when they emerge.
Update: Adam Reilly has details from the horse’s mouth (Globe SE Joe Sullivan):
As reported earlier today by Bruce Allen of Boston Sports Media Watch, there are some big changes afoot at the Globe’s sports desk–including the hiring of Albert Breer from the Sporting News to replace Mike Reiss; Adam Kilgore moving from Red Sox to Patriots coverage; Chris Gasper taking over Tony Massarotti’s online-columnist slot; and Julian Benbow moving to the Celtics beat.
Won’t post the entire e-mail here, but I will post part of it. Here’s the part that makes my speculation above moot:
Christopher L. Gasper (Chris to his friends) is our new web columnist,
essentially replacing Tony Massarotti. Tony is now working for WBZ-FM radio
but continues to write part-time for Boston.com. Chris will become the face
and voice of Boston.com sports. Given his youth, he brings a tremendous
expertise of Boston sports to this job.
Well, then. I had wondered whether Mazz would continue to write as frequently as he had been, since he now has a full-time hosting gig at The Sports Hub. Now we know.
This is a great opportunity for Gasper, who is a very nice guy and a good reporter and writer. I look forward to reading (more of) his stuff.
